Le traduzioni di Gramsci in inglese
e la loro ricezione nel mondo anglofono

Abstract
Lo scopo dell’articolo è quello di tracciare a grandi linee i processi che hanno portato nel mondo anglofono, e in particolare in Gran Bretagna, l’opera di Antonio Gramsci. La diffusione del suo pensiero si basa principalmente sulle traduzioni dei Quaderni dal carcere e delle Lettere del carcere, la cui ricezione avviene però in presenza di un contesto definito da, ad esempio, note di copertina e recensioni e articoli sull’argomento del testo tradotto o sul suo autore. L’articolo presta particolare attenzione alle prime traduzioni di Gramsci in inglese, ormai semi-dimenticate, e le recensioni in inglese delle prime opere pubblicate in Italia, e discute come crebbe la reputazione di comunista “poco ortodosso” di cui era tacciato Gramsci prima ancora che le sue opere venissero tradotte nel mondo anglosassone. Si passa poi a esaminare i primi volumi corposi delle sue opere pubblicati in traduzione inglese, sotto la spinta dell’interesse per Gramsci di un gruppi di storici del Partito Comunista inglese. Negli anni 1960 cresce la fama di Gramsci come autore di primissimo piano e l’interesse per Gramsci esplode negli anni 1970, che videro anche il successo di un’opera teatrale basata sui testi dell’autore sardo. Nel 1971 fu pubblicato Selections from Prison Notebooks, fondamentale nell’introduzione e nell’applicazione dei concetti gramsciani alle società non solo anglofone. A questa traduzione, che, attraverso l’introduzione di termini gramsciani, ha innovato il linguaggio politico inglese nonché la cultura dei Paesi anglofoni, sono poi seguite traduzioni delle Lettere del carcere, di parti dei Quaderni dal carcere e di altri scritti precarcerari. Le diverse traduzioni sono commentate, e sono segnalate alcune correzioni da apportare eventualmente a un’edizione definitiva. Gli scritti di Gramsci hanno avuto un importante effetto non solo sulla politica e sul mondo intellettuale anglofono, ma anche sugli studi culturali e linguistici, influenzando autori come Stuart Hall e Raymond Williams. Vengono infine esaminate le più recenti traduzioni di Gramsci a partire dagli anni 1980. In particolare, vengono proposte ed elencate in un’appendice delle modifiche da apportare a una seconda edizione del testi Further Selections from the Prison Notebooks, tradotto dall’autore del presente articolo.
Abstract
The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the processes which brought the works by Antonio Gramsci in the English speaking world, in particular in the UK. He is mostly known because of the translations from the notebooks and the letters from prison, but translations do not happen in a void, and their reception rests on other things such as back cover notes, reviews and articles on the topics of the translated texts or on their author. The article pays particular attention to the semi-forgotten first English translations and reviews of Gramsci’s works, as well as to the way his stature began to grow before the the translations of these first volumes, giving rise to his reputation as – in the opinion of many observers – a “non-orthodox” communist. Gramsci’s reputation further grew in the 1960s, the interest in his work being paramount in the 1970s, when a successful play based on his Ordine Nuovo experience was also staged. The Selections from Prison Notebooks, which was instrumental in the introduction and application of Gramsci’s concepts, was published in 1971 and introduced new terminology into English political discourse, and new political concepts into the political culture of the English-speaking countries.. The volume was followed in a steady stream by more selections from the Prison Letters, from the Prison Notebooks and from other writings. The various translations are commented upon, and some corrections which may improve the definitive edition are suggested. Gramsci’s work was influential not only on the political and intellectual world, but also on cultural studies and linguistics, on authors such as Stuart Hall and Raymond Williams. Finally, the latest translations of Gramsci’s writings are taken into consideration. In particular, the author suggests and lists in an appendix a number of corrections which should be implemented in a second edition of Further Selections from the Prison Notebooks, translated by himself.
